The Patric Morrissey lectures - Spring 2010

Monet self portrait

Van Weyden

Gossaert

This Springs Talks will concentrate on Painting. In the main, they reflect recent exhibitions, which celebrate the anniversaries of the painters concerned. The spur of the Monet exhibition in Paris has encouraged an attempt in three talks to look at the extraordinary originality of his work. It should be possible to demonstrate the freshness of his art, constantly evolving right up to his last paintings in the Orangery and the Marmottan Museum in Paris.

The other artists demonstrate a new awareness of the humanist antecedents, which are reflected in an educated approach to their subject matter, through which each is determined to express themselves in their own way. The awareness of the work of Van Eyck and other Flemish artists encouraged the development of a new art in Valencia and Portugal. Recent exhibitions in Berlin and Louvain on the work of Campin and Van der Weyden have given us a better understanding of how they worked. Recent technical examination of some of their paintings has provided fresh insights into their superb craftsmanship.

Jan Gossaert at present the subject of a large exhibition in New York, a part of which is coming to the National Gallery in February, represents an attempt of a Northern Painter to assimilate the language of the Renaissance through which, he has created some unforgettable paintings.

Bronzino’s 500th anniversary has been celebrated this year by an exhibition in Florence.

His superb portraits underline his role as painter to the Medici. He was also a poet and much of his work echoes the misgivings of his teacher Pontormo.
