Melita Frances Moule
The artists show individual responses to the local environment – their use of different and varied media ensure unusual and exciting exhibitions.
In her paintings Rita takes a closer look at the ancient eroded surfaces of the landscape. Her work is a fusion of direct observation, emotional response and experimentation. The layering, scraping, and scratching of paint creates an archeology beneath the painted surfaces.
An appreciation of the open spaces in nature inspires Pearl to paint coastlands ‘plein air’ and create contemporary works in her studio which build on her interpretation and feeling for movement and colour in the natural environment.
Melita Frances has a deep fascination with the light and atmosphere over sea and shore and a curiosity about the geological structure of the land. In the studio, her quick ‘en plein air’ sketches act as springboards for traditional as well as abstract paintings.
Stephen produces both 2D and 3D work. “Making great art is a deep passion of mine. This leads to participation in ‘journeys’ across both land and water and I see it as part of the human condition. I find inspiration from local walks both here from my home on the coast of Portland, and West Dorset, where the perspective of this unique landscape is much altered when viewed from the hill tops, many previously occupied by ancient ancestors and all along the Jurassic coastline which is unrivalled in its variety.”
Holly Norris is a mixed media artist working mainly with textiles and printmaking. She is based on Portland and responds to her environment by creating semi-abstract works looking at textures and movement. She is particularly interested in seascapes and rock formations, and has experimented with layering stitch and painting, creating space and movement for the viewer. Recently she has been working with how stitch can be combined with ceramics.
